Sildenafil (Viagra) has long been a staple in the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED), but the effects of the drug on the blood vessels in the genitals of the penis are unclear.
However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says that it's unlikely to impact a man's sexual function.
The drug, known chemically as sildenafil citrate, acts on the enzyme phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5). This enzyme is the enzyme that breaks down the blood vessels in the penis, causing blood vessels to dilate. Sildenafil citrate's effect is similar to that of other drugs in that it relaxes blood vessels to increase blood flow.
Viagra works by blocking the PDE5 enzyme and it relaxes blood vessels in the penis, which helps increase blood flow. The effect lasts for about four hours, giving men an erection for four to six hours. This is similar to the effects of Viagra on the brain.
The drug is sold under the brand name Revatio, but many men wonder why it's marketed in this manner, as it has no effect on blood vessels.
